The Traveller's Rest Inn, February 1997

I have to thank Mark Wigmore for finding this family run pub. We really only visited this pub by accident, as the weather was a little too wild on the hills to make it up Helvellyn. Well kept Jennings beers on offer including the wonderful Snecklifter (abv 5.1% - a dark, malty strong bitter). The pub was built in the 16th-century and is situated a little way north of Grasmere on the A591. Good value home-cooked meals are served and these are available all day during the summer season. There's a separate games room up some steps to the left as you enter. If it's cold and wet there's a brilliant log fire which will soon warm you up as you cue for a pint. If it's beer literature you're after to find some more great pubs, there's the last 6 or so issues of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide available to look at. If the weather's warm and sunny, you can always sit outside in the garden and take in the marvellous views.
