Alison, John, Me, the 'Beast' pump, Gareth,
Jamie and Tim consuming Exmoor Beast, January 2002

Tucked away amidst the maze of twisting streets in Lynton this small 18th Century hotel offers high quality accommodation, friendly personal service and decent real ale and food. Our visit one Saturday in the depths of winter revealed an enticing cosy, comfortable bar. Our efforts to climb the steep path from Lynmouth were rewarded by Exmoor Beast (abv 6.6%), a real ale of formidable strength and full-bodied character brewed only in the winter months, a clear necessity to provide us with the strength and courage to return to the full might of the wintry weather and our journey back to our National Trust basecamp in Countisbury. Not one but two pints ('gasps' of shock from Mr. and Mrs. Average of Bracknell, Berkshire) were consumed both without hesistation nor concern for this brews great strength. For some the beer was not enough and their temptation drew them to pounce on the nearest available menu and peruse the wide range of good quality moderately priced food options. The courteous staff were soon busy serving the food and the bowls of homemade soup and tasty sandwiches were consumed accompanied by nods of satisfaction amidst the lively conversation.

The twenty or so folk that accompanied me to the pub all agreed that this pub is definitely well worth a visit. It also offers excellent accommodation, more formal dining if required, and should the weather be favourable, outside seating.
