Me, Mark and Phil outside the pub in February 1999

Certainly a very remote pub, it's situated two miles east of Postbridge on the B3212 road which goes to Moretonhampstead. It's the third highest pub in England (the highest being the Tan Hill Inn in North Yorkshire). It offers commanding views south across Dartmoor to the south coast and is popular with locals, bird watchers and walkers. You can be sure of a friendly welcome from the staff.

The main bar area is always cosy on a winter's night as there are open fires at either end. Allegedly one has been kept almost continuously alight since 1845 though when we left at 11.15pm both were burning very low! A very comfortable bar with part oak-panelled walls and settles around the outer granite walls.

Beer wise they've beers from the Butcombe and Badger breweries as well as Devon real ale and usually a guest beer on offer too. Good range of home-cooked food from sandwiches and pasties to Scottish salmon.

Fine views can be had such as this one a couple of hundred yards
down the road to the west, November 2001
