The Valiant Trooper, June 1999

A great pub set in a beautiful village in the Hertfordshire countryside attracting both locals and diners from further afield. It's also not far from the Ridgeway Path and walkers often stop here for refreshments. A cosy beamed pub with low ceilings which even one of the barmen banged his head on whilst I was there. Very popular fairly simple food is available every lunchtime and evening in the bar except Sunday and Monday evenings. They had some interesting specials on offer too. There's a restaurant off to the side serving what has been described to me as 'most excellent food' and the prices were very reasonable for Hertfordshire. Noticed that there were some tables in the beer garden at the rear.

You're greeted at the bar by a couple of those tall things that serve lots of those nasty lagery and cidery type drinks. They've 4 or 5 handpumps which are conveniently located off round the side almost out of sight. Fortunately though there's a handy chalk board on the wall clearly listing the beers and prices. Had a fantastic pint of Mauldons Best (abv 3.8%), a great session beer well worth trying. And, they topped it up without me asking them too! I was very impressed at actually receiving a whole pint in this day and age, and decided to have another to celebrate this unusual occurrence.
