Richenda, me and Ian in Chambers, September 1999

Not really one for theme pubs but I must admit that I was very impressed by this one and decided to include it in my pub guide. As the name suggests and indeed the location of the pub (near the law courts) the pub has a courts theme with a beamed ceiling covered with quotations. There's a oak-panelled room with leather armchairs and newspapers if you want to check the news headlines. It's certainly a lively pub as it stays open later than most pubs in the area. At lunchtimes it is generally full of office workers taking advantage of the very reasonably priced food which appears in generous portions. There's a separate dining room towards the back of the pub serving everything from soup and baked potatoes through stir-fry beef with black bean sauce. Meals are served at lunchtimes from 12 and during the evening from 5.30pm to about 9.30pm.

During the evening the atmosphere becomes very lively with live music frequently on offer. The atmosphere remains friendly as the door staff keep troublemakers well away. There are noticeably more youngsters in the pub during the evening though saying that there seemed to be lots of business folk in suits staggering around right through to 1am.

I was also very impressed by the quality of the beers that they had on offer with friendly bar staff even though they did seem to be rather overworked. Beers from the Marstons and Theakstons brewery are on offer all of the time, I was told by a local with the odd guest or two.
