Jim outside the Market Porter (if you can spot him!), February 2002

Borough Market is one of the most popular traditional markets in London and rightfully so. A tremendous range of fine foods are available including my favourite, Herdwick lamb available from Farmer Sharp's stall. Andrew Sharp, who runs the stall, can quite often be seen enjoying a pint after a hard days work in the market next door. As this excellent pub's conveniently sited right next to the market, the pub is frequented by many of the market workers. As many of the market staff work unsociable hours overnight, the pub has a special licence to open between 6 and 8:30am on weekdays to serve the needs of weary workers, and indeed quite often weary clubbers making a quick pit stop on their way home from dancing the night away. After the breakfast session, the pub closes and reopens at lunchtime when it is frequented by city office workers and tourists. I was quite impressed by the wide ranging clientele that I saw in the pub, it seems to always be busy!

The pub comprises several timber panelled or beamed cosy rooms divided by decorative glass panels. Each part of the pub has an individual feell, making for a variety of drinking environments. Despite the pub's busy nature, expect a decent welcome from the staff, and perhaps someone to have a quick chat with if you're feeling sociable. Good varied selection of quality real ales on offer. They must certainly shift their ale looking at the number of folk drinking it! Decent food is available at lunchtimes.

Definitely a popular pub this one, February 2002
