The King's Head is what I class a proper pub, and Mike, the current landlord since 2005, is keen to ensure the pub remains the hub of the community offering a warm welcome to locals and visitors alike. I have very fond memories of this classic Yorkshire village pub ever since my first visit in 1995. So many pubs have turned their backs on This is definitely one of my top 5 UK pubs and thanks go to Dr. Colin "Beavis - yeh" Johnson for suggesting the pub. The bar staff really went out of their way to be welcoming and polite in this very comfortable well kept pub. They even apologised when it came to closing time and offered us another pint if we wished before our walk back in the pitch black to the next village where we were staying (Hi to the policemen that stopped their car in the dead of night to check whether we were criminals or not. Luckily we weren't!). The pub is small with just a single bar with several tables scattered around the room. There's also seating outside as can be seen from the picture above. They serve both lunchtime and evening meals with excellent value generously filled sandwiches as well as a reasonable variety of hot meals too.

The clientele is mainly local and many played dominoes over a pint of the amazingly well kept beer. They had a local Swaled Ale beer on offer brewed in the village. If you ask the landlord nicely he might even show you around the brewery. They also had three other real ales on offer including from the local Dent Brewery (Shangri Baa, a strong dark beer). They also had Red Cuillin, an award winning beer from the Isle of Skye brewery. It's 4.2% ABV with an amazing fruity, hoppy and malty taste with a wonderful dry finish. Hold it up to the light and sure enough, it's red!

Anyhow, the pub is traditionally furnished with a display of local crafts in one corner and a really old door to the loos (it's amazing the things you remember). All in all a great pub to visit in one of my favourite walking areas of Britain....
